Haven’t decided yet where your travel plans will take you this year? Why not check out all that Cuba has to offer, particularly Ciego de Avila Province.

Ciego de Avila, a rural province of sugar cane, citrus fruits and pineapples, is located in the eastern region of the country. Traveling to this province brings you across beautiful prairies where Cuba’s finest pineapples are harvested. Its rich traditions give Ciego de Avila its own identity while its tiny islands and keys constitute its greatest tourist treasure, thanks the construction of a causeway linking the mainland with Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. This area of Cuba is marked by years of migration which wove a rich cultural mosaic of Spanish, Haitian and Jamaican immigrants.

Cayo Coco & Cayo Guillermo

cubaCoco and Guillermo keys lie north of the province, being part of the Sabana – Camaguey Archipelago. Cayo Coco is the fourth in the archipelago line. Its 22 km of sand and intense blue seas seem strokes from a painter’s palette. Las Coloradas, another key from the archipelago, is the perfect backdrop for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and fishing. La Jaula and Los Flamencos beaches are considered the best in the keys with some 5km of beautiful coastline.

Made famous by Ernest Hemingway’s Islands in the Stream and The Old Man and the Sea, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco remain the ecological paradise he wrote about in these novels.

Cayo Coco is connected to Cayo Guillermo whose 5 km of beaches eagerly await visitors interested in a closer relation to nature. Hemingway’s yacht, docked at the pretty Pilar Beach, was used during his long fishing voyages along these coasts. It’s here where you still find some of the best and abundant fishing you’ve ever experienced in your life.

Ciego de Avila City

It’s the capital of the province and is known for its architecture: unique portals, arcades, roof tiles and neoclassical columns. Independence Avenue is the heart of the city, where you find the Principal Theatre, the House of Culture, the “Raúl Martinez” Art Gallery, Josè Marti Park, and the “San Eugenio de Palma” church – named after the patron of the city as well as stores, cafeterias and restaurants.

Ciego de Avila and Moron are rich in History. They played important roles during the wars of independence and market the birthplace for a number of Cuban patriots.

Moron

The city is symbolized by a statue of a rooster perched at the city’s entrance. All archeology buffs must make a stop at the Moròn Museum and travel along the 1 km road to Jùcaro – declared a World heritage Site by UNESCO. Other distinctive features of this beautiful city include Casa de la Trova, a place to hear local musicians, the water carnival, and the train station with its uncommon architecture.

Turiguano Island

What was once an island occupying 18,000 hectares, cut off from the main land by a series of streams and channels, is now connected by 23 km long road that provides easy access to this cattle-raising area. The little town that is part of the cattle plan was designed after a Dutch village.

cubaRedonda Lake

Occupying an area of 4 square kilometers, Redonda is a favorite place for large-mouth bass fishermen. The average weight of the bass caught here is 7 pounds, but some 1,500 largemouth bass weighing more than 10 pounds each have been caught here in recent years. The lake gained fame in the early ‘80s when a group of fishermen from the United States caught 5,078 bass in five days of fishing. Fishermen of international fame consider Redonda an ideal lake in which to try for personal, national and international records.

La Leche Lagoon

Between Turiguanò and the coast, near the city of Moròn, lies La Leche (milk) Lagoon, so named because of the sodium carbonate deposits in it, and when stirred by the wind cause the water to turn a milky colour. The lake is refuge for rosy-hued flamingoes and the salty water harbors large numbers of snooks and tarpons. In addition to the fishing, the lake is often used for sailing regattas.

Media Luna Key

Located to the north of Cayo Guillermo and only separated from it by a mile wide channel. It is 13 acres wide and surrounded by the largest and best preserved coral reef of the Caribbean. It is an ideal place for snorkeling and nautical sports.

Aguachales de Falla

One of the few swampy areas on the northern coast is in Ciego de Avila and is where the Aguachales de Falla Hunting Club is located. The area is a system of 7 lakes and dozens of ponds connected by a web of streams and channels; an ideal habitat for endemic and migratory ducks.

The foregoing list of adventures and excursion ideas has something for everyone. Are you asking yourself yet: “What am I waiting for”? Make your arrangements today and look forward to an unforgettable visit to a beautiful destination. Cuba is waiting for you!
