The Stratford – Suchitoto Cultural Linkage Project. The idea that culture can play an important role in the international development has made its appearance on the world’s stage, and a unique joint initiative of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, the Canadian organization CUSO, and Suchitoto is waiting to make its premier. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is a repertory theatre festival, permanently located in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Its mission is to produce, to the highest standards possible, the best works of theatre in the classical and contemporary repertoire, with special emphasis on the works of William Shakespeare. The Festival is also committed to promote art in every of its forms. For many years, CUSO has been working with community groups around the world improving their situation through volunteerism. In El Salvador, they have established a tourism training initiative to provide economic opportunities to youth. This initiative would have a huge impact, since in El Salvador, young people between the ages of 15 and 24 make up 20% of the total population and account for a quarter of those economically active. The plan is to make of Suchitoto a tourist destination and a centre for arts and education. CUSO will support this innovative linkage. Through Canadian volunteers (know as cooperants), and young Salvadorians, they will aid in the development of the wonderful city of Suchitoto. The cooperants (designers, sound and light technicians, costume designers and cutters, directors and actors) will be chosen from the deep resources of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. The professional artists and volunteers will work hand-in-hand with the community developing programs designed to promote cultural activities and tourism. In the future, they expect to attract students from farther villages of Central America. CUSO would help volunteers cover their flight expenses and accommodations, and would make sure to find key Salvadorians who would keep the project running after the cooperants departure.
